Summer Religious Education Program

In 2009, a comprehensive two-week Summer Religious Education program was introduced at St. Columbkille for children of registered parishioners. We have classes for grades K-8th grade.

For years the primary model for religious education has been scheduled as an academic year from September to May. Many dioceses have come to recognize the need for alternative models to meet diverse needs of families.

***PLEASE NOTE ----Our summer program is offered the first two full weeks of June. Students may only miss class, arrive late or leave early one of the 10 days of this session. All Summer Session students are children of registered parishioners of St. Columbkille parish. Our day begins at Mass with drop off at the church no early than 8am and pick up is at the school at 12 Noon.

The documents of Vatican ll and beyond clearly offer religious formation a new direction:

  • One that respects the role of parents as the primary educators of their children in the faith. A partnership between parents and parish leaders is recognized as essential to the faith formation of children.
  • Due to changes in family life, it can be challenging for families to participate in a variety of after-school activities placing religious education in the context of one more activity to fit into an already over-crowded family schedule. The result can be less than satisfactory.

The typical September through May program totals 30 hours of religious education instruction. The two-week summer program is held four hours daily for two weeks also equaling 30 hours plus the addition of daily Mass attendance.

All models of religious formation strive to proclaim the message of Jesus and invite all people to individual conversion to discipleship. However, it is not possible to fulfill this purpose with a “one size fits all” program.

Registrations for the next summer session begin in late February or early March and end May 14th. No additional registrations will be accepted after May 14th to allow for proper planning of the session. The parish bulletin will have registration and tuition details at that time of the year.

Parish Participation Hours – This is a component to Religious Education and Sacramental Preparation. RE families are asked to complete 10 hours of Parish Participation between Aug. 1st and the following July. Opportunities must all be connected to the parish events or ministries.
